Once you have a child using the ‘big potty’, it’s bound to happen: a clogged toilet. Why? Because most children do not know the proper amount of toilet paper needed, and tend to just enjoy rolling out a big handful. Learning the right amount of toilet paper to use is also important in the toilet training process.

Determine the right amount for your child and then show them how to count the squares as they pull it from the roll. This will give them some concept of the amount to use when they go to the bathroom. Explain to them that sometimes more is required to get them clean after they ‘poo’. You can show them about how much for this as well. Kids do better if they have a visual image of what you are telling them.

To reinforce this concept even more, make a craft that will also serve as a reminder with your child.

What you’ll need

• Toilet paper
• Construction paper
• White glue
• Markers and stickers, optional

What to do

Tear off the number of squares you’ve determined that is right for your child. Let your child glue them in a fun pattern on a piece of construction paper. If desired, they can add more detail with markers and stickers. Display their unique artwork on the fridge. Have your child count the squares so they know how much toilet paper to pull off the roll. They will look forward to counting the squares after they have a successful trip to the bathroom.
