Pretending to be a dentist will encourage healthy oral hygiene habits that can last a lifetime. Now that’s something to smile about!

Children at this age love to dress up in all kinds of costumes — princess, fireman, superhero, doctor — and engage in imaginative play. Adding dentist to the list may encourage your child to brush her teeth tonight without your having to ask.

Start by asking her if she wants to be the dentist or the patient first. (Allowing her as much control as possible will enhance her enjoyment of the activity.) Provide your child with an adult-size white oxford shirt to be used as the lab coat. Make a name tag that reads Dr. plus your child’s first name. Hand your child a toothbrush, a pack of dental floss, and a small tube of toothpaste.

Help her to wet the toothbrush, apply the toothpaste, and then brush your teeth. Demonstrate how to swish water in your mouth to rinse out the remaining toothpaste. Once your teeth are clean, praise her for a job well done and switch roles.
