Maui Wowie Luau!

Duration: any

Age: baby, toddler, child

Skill for Bub: Just for fun, Mind Builder

summary:

Escape to a tropical paradise with your child in the comfort of your own home!

Does a Hawaiian escape sound fun? Imagine your child contentedly building sand castles or laughing as waves lap at her heals while you bathe in the sun sipping a frosty drink. If a trip to Hawaii is not in your immediate future, get your child involved and create a tropical paradise in your own backyard or the park (or inside if the weather is cold)!

To get started, dress the part. Leis can be purchased at party supply stores, or make your own using crepe paper. Grass skirts are also available, but to keep it simple, just have your child put on her bathing suit. Here are more fun ideas to make your luau a success!

Make a Volcano

Wow your child with her own volcano eruption.

What You’ll Need:
* 1 soda or juice bottle with lid
* Red or orange food colouring
* 1 tablespoon flour
* 1/2 cup vinegar
* 1 tablespoon baking soda
* Funnel

What To Do:

  • Let your child help you funnel the dry ingredients into the bottle.
  • Cover the bottle, then shake it to mix ingredients.
  • In a separate container, mix the vinegar and add food coloring. Let your child decide which color is “just right.”
  • Bury the bottle in dirt or sand, leaving the bottle’s top unobstructed.
  • Remove the lid.
  • Add the vinegar mix to the dry ingredients and watch your volcano erupt. Add more vinegar for a second eruption.

Island Fish-Shaped Pizzas

What You’ll Need:
* Pre made pizza dough
* 1/2 cup pizza sauce
* 1 cup shredded cheese
* 1 cup fresh pineapple, cut into bite-sized pieces
* 1 cup ham, cut into bite-sized chunks

What To Do:

  • Unroll the dough and place it onto a greased cookie sheet.
  • Cut the dough into sections, and then cut each section into a fish shape (an oblong shape with an attached triangle for the tail).
  • Spread pizza sauce onto the fish.
  • Top with cheese, ham and pineapple chunks.
  • Bake at 220C for 15 minutes or until cheese melts.
