Inexpensive felt or cloth remnants combine to dress up a child’s favourite friends.

Creating doll clothes is a fun way for a child to get creative, work on fine motor skills by using blunt, child-safe scissors and do something nice for a toy they consider to be a best friend.

You’ll need:

  • Felt or fabric remnants
  • Blunt, child-safe scissors
  • Stick-on Velcro
  • Piece of white paper
  • Pencil
  • Lace or velvet trim, buttons or other items for decoration (optional)
  • Fabric glue, if attaching decorations

Here’s what you do:

  • Help your child lay his or her doll on the sheet of white paper.
  • Carefully draw the doll’s shape on the paper with the pencil. This will serve as your template.
  • Have your child cut out the pattern.
  • Allow your child to select the colour of felt or fabric.
  • Place two pieces of the felt on top of each other, or fold in half (this will depend on the size of the doll).
  • Lay the template over the two sheets of felt, and help your child cut around the pattern.
  • Let your child stick pieces of Velcro to attach the sides of the two pieces together.
  • Show her how to place her doll on top of one piece and attach the top to “dress” the doll.
  • Embellish with lace or velvet trim, buttons or other decorations using the fabric glue, if desired.
