Play gentle massage games to relax or stimulate your baby.
Touches and caresses are just as necessary as food is for your baby. Massage provides a relaxing means of touch, which is an important stimulus. It is also vitally important to teach your baby about the different parts of the body to increase their self-awareness. A variety of techniques can be explored through various books and videos. You can enjoy these activities together by following some basic guidelines:
Choose a time when your baby is content and comfortable. Be mindful of the temperature.
Either massage your baby with their clothes on, or undress them and use a light carrier oil.
Try both gentle and firm strokes depending on what your baby likes best.
Massage their head, chest, arms, legs and back with the tips of your fingers and the flat palm of your hands. For their head and chest work from the centre out to the sides. Massage the entire length of their arms, legs and back concentrating on fingers and toes one at a time. Use long strokes and circular motions.
A bath for your baby is a nice way to finish off this relaxing activity.
