Voila! Fruits and Veggies
Age: baby, toddler, parent
Skill for Bub: Hand/eye coordination, Mind Builder
Awaken your child’s sense of touch with a variety of fruits and vegetables.
If you need a break from all the buzzes, lights, and bells of today’s baby toys, try this quiet activity that will stimulate your little one’s mind and senses. The different textures of fruits and vegetables offer your child an entertaining way to explore his world.
Gather a variety of washed, unpeeled fruits. Consider these:
- Apples (smooth skin)
- Oranges (bumpy, semi-rough skin)
- Kiwis (soft, fuzzy skin)
- Large strawberries (rough seeds, leafy top)
- Asparagus (long stems with nubs)
- Cauliflower (rough florets)
Introduce one piece at a time in a show-and-tell fashion, allowing your child a few moments to feel each one as you describe what it is. Keep all produce away from your child’s mouth — be especially careful if using smaller produce such as berries or mushrooms — and be sure to wash her hands thoroughly when you are finished with this activity.
