Simple games can keep kids entertained while on the go, and make the car ride more relaxed for everyone.
Time flies when you’re having fun – and the miles fly by, too! You can make a long family car trip seem a lot shorter if you have fun with your kids along the way. Plan ahead with a few car activities and make the journey as much fun as the destination.
Read Out Loud
Reading stories makes the time pass quickly in the car – both for the reader and for the family members who are listening. Let your child pick out several of his favorite books and keep them beside his car seat. If you are not driving, read the books to him. If you are, let him “read” them to you!
Hint: Some people get queasy when they read in the car. If you or your child are one of them, try playing or even recording some books on tape. This way, your child can still see the pictures while someone else does the reading!
Give everyone a sheet of aluminum foil. Have them mold it into anything they want: animal shapes, toy flying saucers, balls, jewellery, crowns, headband, necklaces and masks. Be creative. It’s inexpensive, fun and easy to clean up.
Give your child a travel journal (a spiral-bound notebook) that he can draw in throughout the trip. Have him draw what he sees from the car window: Was that a cow? Look – a semi-truck! How many cars is the train engine pulling? Help write the captions and the date in the journal so you always remember what your child was thinking.
Remember that it’s sometimes nice to sit in the back of the car with your kids while the other parent is driving. Play games right along side your kids – you might be surprised at how much fun you have, too.
