Hi Alex,
I am 12 weeks pregnant and I have been to see my LMC twice and feel really uncomfortable with her. I am not sure what to do. Is it too late to change to another independant? How would we go about this? My husband and I talked about things last night as I was wondering if I was being too sensitive, however even he didn`t like her, and Eddie likes everyone.
The issues I have is that she isn`t answering our questions and fobs us off. Last night I asked about her views on pain relief and she advised it was a waste of time discussing it now as there was a lot more to get through before we start talking about that.
We asked what happens if there are two couples going into labour at the same time who would support us. She just laughed and said it has never happened. I pressed this again and she advised the floor staff.
The other big issue I have, is yes I am overweight. I had been on Weightwatchers before becoming pregnant and we have been very lucky not to miscarry at all. I have been extra good with my diet, however our LMC just makes me feel like I am a bad mother already. She has no idea who I am or who my husband is. She hasn`t asked about how active we are or what we do. I feel that she has presumed I am a couch potato that eats too many crisps. The fact is I mountain bike and do my cross trainer every week (3 exercise sessions per week). I have always been overweight, but always very active. For someone my size I am actually fitter than I look. I am 121KGs and 5ft 10 inches. Thus far I have put on 2kgs since finding out I was pregnant.
As we are first time parents we have no idea what to expect, what costs are associated with our decisions and I would like to plan in advance.
Can you please help us and give us some guideance.
It depends on where you live as to your options. You should be entitled to consult another midwife and if that option is not available you could try choosing another area to give birth. If you are overweight, pregnancy is not the time to try to lose weight and if you are careful with your intake you should find that you won’t gain much weight during the pregnancy. It is advisable to keep as active as possible as this will help you and the baby stay healthy and it also prepares you for labour. Best wishes,
