Hi, my 7month old son still won`t self settle (most of the time). Most of the time he goes into his cot quite happily as he is tired. I play the cot moible a couple of times and he winds down further watching it (with his dummy). I then switch on the soft music and give him his toy duck to hold. (this was introduced as a security measure as when he wouldn`t stop screaming I would go in and put the dummy in again and he would grab my hand, it was the only thing to help calm him down (other than picking him up). If I took my hand away he would scream incessantly. I let him cry/scream for over an hour - going in on and off to put his dummy back in, but the only thing that calms him down is to hold my hand. After an hour if I stay with him and let him hold my hand he then falls asleep within a couple of mins - although sometimes this can be in excess of 10 mins. Overall, he seems to need my hand to finally drift off to sleep. Is there something else I can do?
I`m a midwife dealing with pregnancy, childbirth and newborns. It`s best to direct your sleep related questions to Maree, or see your Early Childhood Health Centre.
Best wishes,
