When I should go onto the "full" pill instead of the mini pill?

Hi I gave birth to my first child on the 31/1/08. I began breastfeeding straight away and started taking the mini pill at about the 6 week mark. I have exclusively breastfed until starting her on solids at 6 months. She is now 9.5 months old and loves her solid food. I have now cut back to 3 breastfeeds a day in between her solid meal times. I have just started what appears to be a period the last 2 days after not having one at all since giving birth. Could this be purely because I am cutting back on the breastfeeds? I also wanted to know when I should go onto the "full" pill as apposed to the mini pill to avoid pregnancy, or will the full pill interfere with my still 3 breastfeeds a day? I am planning to wean her completely from me by 12 months of age so should I perservere with mini pill until I have done this and just expect periods to start up again? Thanks

Answer: Hi,
You need to continue on the minipill when breast feeding. Reducing the breast feeds is what is causing the return of your period, although some women still menstruate when fully breast feeding.
Best wishes,
