When did your bub/toddler go down to 1 day sleep

Hi,
My bub is now about 12 1/2 months old and has been finding it hard to go down for his afternoon nap. He has a morning nap at say 10.15 - 12 then we put him down for an afternoon nap at say 3pm. Lately he has been talking/moaning for at least 45 minutes before he might drift off to sleep. He will only get about 1/2 hour sleep before we have to wake him again (so he doesn't sleep right till dinner). Sometimes he takes ages to go to sleep for both of his naps. Does this probably mean that he is ready to go down to 1 sleep a day? And if so what is the best way to go about doing it?

I just dont want to drop a sleep and then find that he is overtired and is affecting his day.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

my ds dropped his nap as soon as he turned 1. he just did not want/need to the morning sleep.

he is 2.2 months now and still has his arvo nap, though i am considering dropping it as he is taking ages to go to sleep at night.

good luck

DS started that whole process of battling the arvo sleep around 11months! I gave up fighting with him & just gave him the one sleep. It was a little hard at first & took until he was about 12-12.5months before he settled into a proper routine. I used to put DS down around 1030am, then slowly lengthened his time & now he goes down easily at 1130am & will sleep until about 1. It's hard during that transition stage, but gets easier. Good luck with it all :-)

In my experience, the more sleep during the day, the less they sleep at night. All my kids (12) only had one "nap" of approx 1hr mid morning up until the age 1yr. Then all naps cut out. Which wasn't difficult as they never really liked to have a nap. By the end of day they fed, bathed and tucked up in bed sound asleep by 5pm. You don't hear a peep from them till around 7am or later. Good luck.

JessS79 I am having the exact same problem. As we speak DD is in her cot chatting and banging away where 'normally' she'd be sound asleep. And same thing in the arvo, I also have to wake her up.
My question is tho.. how do you organise their day? i.e. what time to nap etc.
We've been super busy this past week and she has missed quite a few of her afternoon naps. She does ok if you keep her really busy but by dinner time (5pm) she's grizzly and tired. Then once she has dinner and a bath she's overtired I think.

Sorry if I hijacked your post

I think 1 nap is a great idea! It's usually a bigger one I found. I started putting them down at 11am and they would sleep for a up to 3 hrs. As they get older they need less sleep so I would gradually extend the time so I eventually put them down at 12.30 until 2.30.

When do you give your kids lunch? If they are going down at 11 and not up til 2... before or after??

I know this wasn't directed at me per se but assuming he hasn't been grazing all morning I give him lunch before he goes down. If he has been grazing then he can have lunch when he wakes up.

Both my older 2 went to 1 day sleep only at 12-13 months old and it was a set routine by the time they were 14 months, it is much easier to get out of the house, you've got all morning then you can go out again for the afternoon after they wake up :-)
It can be rough transitioning to one day sleep but that usually fixes itself quickly, also if they need to go back to 2 sleeps on the odd occasion that's ok too.
My DD1 is 3.5 yrs old and still needs day sleeps about half the time, if we have had a big morning or a late night the night before.

Hi all
My lil man cut his 2 sleeps a day out when he was 21 months old.It was only because we got home from holidays daddy and Grandma had brought him a big bed so he was able to get in and out of his bed. It didnt worry me though as being nearlly 2 he would be cutting them out soon anyway. He always slept 2 hours in the morning and 2 hours in the afternoon plus 12-14 hours durning the night.
He is now 3 and still needs a 2-2.5 hour sleep or he just doesnt cope and he still sleeps really good at night time.
