any suggestions re:mozzie bites Rss

Just wondering if anyone can offer any alternative remedies to help my poor ds. He is somewhat allergic to mozzies and got attacked while with dp's parents last nitht.

This is some of the aftermath

So i have given him a dose of an antihistamine and put some anti itch cream but im wondering if there is anything else i can do to help.

If its not any better by tommorrow (have only just given antihistamine as it only got really bad this arvo) i will take him to the doctors, but wondering if anything else to help in the mean time.

I feel so bad for him and its hard even in the past the doctors just tell me to give him antihistamine too but he is just so sore and itchy, breaks my heart, its not like he can avoid them forever. They just love him lol

we have this awesome mozzie repellant called 'Ya Mate' its great for stopping them from biting in the first place but also helps take the itch away straight away after they've been bitten. My little one is allergic to mozzies too and comes up much the same after a bite. i find that using the antihistamine and the ya mate really helps to make them go by the next day.

What Antihistamine are you using?? Claratyne is great because its only one dose every 24 hours so good for clearing them up quicker usually

im using auries(not sure how to spell it, its the one on the tv where the chick has the wool knitted all over her face). anyway so far this has worked the best with ds allergies ie hayfever etc and thats what is in the house. i figure if its the best for him with hayfever it would be good for his bites too.

never heard of ya mate, where abouts do you get it

he knows it will help so he takes it regardless of how bad it will taste and we wash it down with some milk. he didnt gag and say it was yuk so thats something, but ds is on daily medication for other issues so he is usually really good and knows its for the best

Hi

A hydrocortisone cream will help, see your chemist for advice - there's a few available.

My DD got some mozzie bites and the welts that came up were unbelievable.

So cream and Phenergan helped.
Paw paw ointment is great for mozzie bites or euky bear (vapor rub). Both take the itch away. Otherwise my mum use to soak mine in vinegar but if the surface is broken it will sting but relieved the bite instantly.
Zyrtec for kids is great too, works really quickly and my DS loves the taste (comes in drops to put into any liquid or a liquid to measure out like panadol).

I come out exactly the same way as ur DS does, i find a bite & burn cream from any chemist works great for me-has an anaesthetic (lignocane) & an anti-bacterial agent in it too. That covers all problems from pain/heat, to itch and infections.

If his welts are like mine, they're hot as hell to touch and itchy as anything and when you do scratch them a clear watery liquid will seep out and then dry over like a scab. They will keep weeping out once scab is knocked off until all goo is gone unfortunately.
thanks girls, he is asleep now so im hoping that is will settle now that he isnt scratching

yeah its a bit like that. occasionally we have had to have antibiotics as well as he has ended up with his whole leg swollen and doctors have said its cellulitis. im hoping that doesnt happen this time

antiperspirant roll on deodorant. The aluminium in it stops it itching.

I was going to suggest vinegar.... but only for when the bites have just happened.
I was amazed with how quick the redness goes down and they don't itch at all!

well so much for that, seems they are much worse this morning. have a cold face washer on them to try and take some off the heat and swelling, more cream, and anti histamine

Thanks for the vinegar suggestions i'm definately going to try that next time as i don't like using things full of chemicals on their delicate skin.

We have a antibiotic cream for when she itches too much as they turn into a massive infection with her too. hopefully he is feeling better soon nothing worse then horrible itchy mozzie bites they are so hard to not scratch

to help with the itch, rub on a small amount of vicks vapour rub

My younger bro is allergic to mozzie. Bites even worse than this and they LOVE him.
When he was younger it was worse and he would be covered head to toe in them. He looked like a plague victim and im not exaggerating.
The only thing that helped (which was doctor reccomended) was getting vitamin e casuals and piercing the end with a pin then rubbing it on. Mum would then put a gauze patch over to stop him scratching. He's 16 now and only has a few scars left so it helped with that too.

Good luck, hope it gets sorted for you.
Something i discovered by accident.. Peppermint essence rubbed on the site of the bite! it doesnt sting, its cheap and it removes the itch almost instantly, ive been using on my older kids since they were babies and its fantastic.
Try it out
Hey Kathyrn

My DD (6.5mth) swells up like no tomorrow when she gets bitten by mozzies and midgies. We live near wetlands so they are pretty bad.

When she gets bitten I wash the area with warm salty water and then lathered the bites with paw paw cream. That seems to work for her. she still has some scars on the back from the bites.

My dad swears by vicks. He always buys a cheap tub of vicks and lathers himself when we are outside at night. Funnily enough, the mozzies stay away from him!!!!
hey i haven't read the other replies sorry

when i was young my dad and nan would put vinegar on my/everyones mozzie bites anyway it stings a bit but it always worked to make them go away and stop the itch

Hi there,
Don't know if this has been suggested to you or not. But my DS is allergic to mozzie bites and his swell up and have a tight yellow dot on the top of them. They are nasty.
We use tea tree oil on them and it helps bring the swelling down and clears them up in a few days.
I always find with my DS that the bites are the worst the second day and in the middle of the night.
Hope you DS is okay now.
I use Paw Paw ointment, both my girls (almost 8 and almost 3) have come up with big massive welts from Mozzies. Miss almost 8 has grown out of it, so hoping Miss almost 3 does the same thing.
