Anyone with gestational diabetes Rss

Ok, had it last pregnancy, ended up on insulin.

This pregnancy have been concerned with how I'm feeling.

Last pregnancy never had a problem with early morning levels, but through the day they'd shoot up.

Well, I found my sugar tester last night so thought I would do my morning sugars this morning. 5.4. That's high isn't it??
I had GD with DS. I didn't end up on insulin but was very close at the end.

That seems like a high fasting level. My pre-breaky levels were usually about 4 (just below or above).

So have you been diagnosed with GD this pregnancy too? Or were you testing out of interest? I'd chat to my dietician or GP and have them monitor the developments.

Good Luck.

yeah, just a tad.. it should be under 5 shouldn't it?

I've been feeling dodgy (not sick, but the same dodgy I felt before last time) and have had a few fasting bloods done at the blood taking place (whatever they are called, pregnancy has removed that word from my vocabulary).

I had actually organised to get hold of a sugar tester some weeks back but ended up finding my own one, so thought I would test just to see. At this stage they have me scheduled for glucose test only 2 weeks earlier than usual and I'm thinking I will need to do it quite a bit sooner than that.

Put it bluntly I had a feeling something was up. Hmm.

But yes, is 5.0 the max morning level usually?? That's what I can't remember - if it is 5.0 or 5.5. I never (and I mean like only maybe once or twice) ever had high fasting bloods....

My GP is aware that I'm concerned about it this time, which is why he does bloods each time I go in. Think I might just give the hossie a call on Monday and see if I can get in to get the glucose test done a bit sooner.

Thanks for getting back to me smile
You're welcome! I remember that yucky feeling- but I'd never been pregnant before so thought it was part of the all-day sickness. What a surprise when I got such high score on the glucose test (Yippee!....what?...oh...high scores aren't good?... blink .)

5.5 is the max for fasting levels (eta although they don't like it to get that high regularly) but you are in the higher probability category as you've had GD before. I think you go with your feeling and get tested earlier if possible.

I am pretty sure that 5.5 is the upper limit. If you feel off though best to get checked out sooner, esp if you've had it before. Oh I hope it's not sad Is it you who has a big KFC addiction lol or someone else I have on FB????
i had gestational diabetes this pregnancy and the fasting levels were between 4 and 5.3 2 hours after meals had to be between 4 and 6.7

i would definately be speaking to your Dr and getting the test done early. You would hate to be feeling off if there was something you could do to help.

p.s - i am the worst penpal ever and have only just sent you another letter! So sorry.

Take care and hope you get some answers soon (and hope that all is clear)

Oh yeah.. 5.5! That's it! smile

I never felt off when I had it and they asked me if I felt better once I started the diet and I didn't feel any change at all. Guess I'm lucky.

I'd start trying to follow the diet now just in case, it won't do you any harm smile

I figure I'll have it next time too but after watching my sister go overdue and then have a 37 hour labour I was kind of happy I got induced laugh laugh

LMAO no it's ME who is the worst!!! I am suuuure it was my 'turn' lmao!!! But with the girls sick, and then you having bubba i thought I'd "leave" you to have some time and then time got away from me and aaqggghhh!!! I feel like a schmuck!! BAHHA!!!!

Yes, I am the KFC addicted one.......lmao.

I think the levels are different between Australia and NZ too - i.e. the levels are lower/higher in one or other country (now wasn't THAT specific lol).

I'm going away in 10 days so hopefully I can arrange to get the test done before then. I might just pick up some more of the testing strips today too and do a few days' worth of levels just as a reference for when I phone through.

Isn't it crap when you know your body well enough to know something isn't quite right......hmmm.....

Thanks all smile

blink geeeez I thought my 25.5 hour labour was bad enough!!!!!!! At least I was early though grin
You can ask to be tested early. My hospital tested me at 12 weeks because I had GD with Cassie and have a high BMI. That test came back positive for GD so I'm really glad that they tested so early.

Different hospitals seem to have different guidelines about what is an 'acceptable' level for a GD patient (a friend of mine in the same city but different hospital has different level requirements) but, at mine, I have to be 5.5 or below for fasting and then 6.7 or below 2 hrs after a meal.

I think the testing for a few days and tracking your levels sounds like a good idea until your next appointment too. I figure, if they test early and your levels are fine there's no real harm but there are certainly benefits of testing early and catching it early smile

All the best.

Leisa.

Thanks Leisa. I was actually quite surprised when they said they would test me early, but their "early" was only 2 weeks earlier than normal. They said apparently nothing usually shows up before then anyway so there isn't much point. I was more of the mindset that if you have had it before (particularly so recently) I thought it could rear its head earlier.

My next appointment isn't til 17 May at this stage. Just wondering if I should try to get one sooner? Maybe if I just see what the levels do over the next day or two then give them a call. The diabtes midwife is only there on Wednesdays, so I'd have to hope they had a vacancy this one coming, as I leave for Victoria the following Wednesday.

Although I really truly hated having GD last time, I would MUCH prefer they get it early if that is possible than leaving things be and waiting.

What management have they got you on at the moment, having been diagnosed so early???
I've been REALLY lucky to be able to control it with diet only since 12 weeks. Getting to the point of being over being so careful about what I'm eating etc but at least it means that they're happy for me to try and go into labour on my own - they're talking about letting me go up to 7 days over before inducing. I've actually been gradually losing weight with the pregnancy so I think that me getting healthier has helped a lot with controlling my levels too.

Not all hospitals test that early (although I'm really glad mine did!) but if you've been tracking your levels and find that there's starting to be a problem it certainly gives you a lot more basis for getting them to do the test early. With mine they said they'd do the test up to 3 times for me just to make sure I didn't develop it along the way - they were going to test me at 12 weeks, 20 weeks and then the normal 28 weeks if the earlier ones were fine (in a way I'm glad it showed up at the 12 week test - I HATE blood tests lol).

I have been told that it may turn out that I've actually developed Type 2 diabetes which is why the GD showed up so early in the pregnancy but I won't know whether it is GD or Type 2 until I do the retest at 6 weeks after Kermit arrives. Really hoping I get the all clear at that point though smile. I want to be able to stop being so obsessive about how much/what I eat lol. I'll try to continue with the serving sizes etc as I can see the benefits they're having on my health but I want to be able to have those splurge days occassionally, I just can't do them when I know that I'm testing (although that's probably a good thing lol).

I wasn't so lucky on the diet front. After only a week or two of trying just with diet my levels were consistently high, even when I (naughty naughty) cut out ALL carbs to see if I could stay under the level sad Was a bit sad. I didn't handle it all that well actually. Really quite badly. Emotionally I mean lol. This time around, will see what happens, but I have psychologically prepared myself for the fact that I'll have it again, which I think has helped.

I do hope you haven't developed diabetes. That would bite. Do you have it in your family? I have family history of it, plus being over 35, but I'm okay on the BMI front, oh but have had GD before that is the only other thing I think.

Agh. I tested again when I got back from the chemist (hadn't had brekky yet, I know, bad) and it was down to 5.0, lol. Just had some late brekky/early lunch and will do an after food level too just to see what it has to say.

Maybe I'm getting too ahead of myself. I dunno. I just feel pretty well convinced it's all gonna turn to sh*t soon......and I'd rather be ready for it when it happens. I went from being just over the limit in the GTT last pregnancy to being on insulin 4 times a day, regularly raised, within 2 weeks.

Oh, if you have any wonderful low GI/diabetes friendly recipes to share I'd be eternally grateful too!!!!!

Thanks smile

Christy
no real recipes that I use unfortunately, just smaller serves than what I used to eat and changed to wholemeal bread instead of white. When I was diagnosed and went back to the 30-45g of carbs at meals that my dietician recommends I basically had to halve my dinner servings. The good thing though is that I still feel full with the smaller serving sizes so I was just eating way too much.

I hope that because its been diet controlled etc that it is more just an insulin resistance rather than anything else.

All the best with tracking your readings though and hopefully you don't develop GD with this pregnancy.

Leisa.

Ah poo sad LOL. I seem to recall there were certain foods that always set me off so I guess I'll just try to avoid those as much as possible. I'll switch myself to that nice Burgen bread too rather than the processed white crap I like so much lol.

You're doing great guns controlling it with diet, that's excellent news. And great that you are losing weight too if that is making you more healthy!

I"m also hoping it doesn't develop again this pregnancy. I only had DD2 just under 10 months ago, so odds aren't really so great, but I'll take them smile LOL.

Thanks for your help smile

I don't understand why its so different in Aus Christy, I don't know if you remember but I got the GTT when I was only 17weeks because of my BMI. I got given the form to go in when I was 14weeks though I just kept forgetting about it. Do you have to do the urine tests everytime you see mw/dr that tests protein, glucose and others that I don't know?

Yep, I have to pee every time I see them lol. Apparently protocol at the hospital I am at is that if you have had GD before you get the GTT 2 weeks early, and that's it, UNLESS you have other things that lead them to believe they need to do the test earlier. So, I'll do some random tests and fasting bloods etc over the next few days and if they come up dodgy then I'll make an appointment and get the GTT done sooner.

The levels that are acceptable are different between NZ and Australia too (and actually even between some hospitals).

So basically, yes, they adhere to protocol unless something happens to make them change what they do lol.
Oh I wasn't even going to do the 2hr GTT later in pregnancy because mylevels at 17weeks were fine then I had protein in my urine and I had to do another test later in the week and that had glucose in it so they got me to do it again in the end.

I didn't have GD but my fasting levels were always really low.

Go with your gut feeling though
