15 mnth old not walking Rss

Hi, i have a DS (2nd child) who is not yet walking. he has just turned 15mnths- my other ds was walking at 14mnths. He has strted taking a few steps, but is still so wobbly. just does not seem interested.. would love to know when others childrens started waking,., i dont think its late yet- (think if he isnt walkin by 17m that is classed as late) he also only says mum, dad, jack, ta & has now started saying ball, but not often.. how many words do your little ones say.. you would think that i would know all this after already ahving one child.. thanks in advance
My DS (2nd child also) didn't walk til about 18months.
He still doesn't talk a lot - babbles and carries on, but not in English! lol
He's 21months now...

They get there eventually.

Hi there, yes i have a little boy (1st child) he is 15 months old he not walking yet either, when we hold both hands he runs on tip toes but when only holding with 1 hand he doesn't walk properly like he's pengoen toed and wobbely. Im not exactly sure why this is. I also have a friend who's youngest son was 19 months when he started walking properly by himself, before that he was taking a few steps at a time.

If this is of any help im glad, but im worrying about my son with the same problem. so we are seeking medical advice.

Thanks for that gals- ELB82008 would you mind tellig me what medical advice you are getting? i wouldnt really class it as late waking just yet? thx
Hi all, been to the family bowen therapist, he doesn't seem to think anything wrong, he'll grow out it. But he did suggest to put his toys up higher so then he'll have no choice but to try the walking on flat feet, but when he's waiting on his bath to be ready he crab walks flat footed but still penguin toed. He not late he just learning slowely, but i doesn't help that when i was about his age i did the same thing so i guess he has my geans when it comes to learning, but once i hit a particlar age i flew thou it. So i guess it's time to play the waiting game...

Chat later xx oo

Hi if you're worried you could take him to a physio, my eldest DD didn't start walking til she was nearly 18months, prior to this she use to knee walk.

My DD use to walk on tippy toes and penuin toed and the advise I was given from the physio was to massage her feet every morning and night and grab hold of the front of her feet (at the toes) and stretch them back doing this about 5 times, her poor little feet were so tight.

Also to help with the tippy toe walking, buy some hard soled shoes and let him wear them for a couple hours a day, I was amazed how my daughter started standing and cruising with flat feet after taking the physios advise.
hi, my2bubbas, thankyou, we took our son to the bowen therapist, he sid to start putting shoes on him, so we have. but he's not 1 for leaving them on. but i'll try what you said and see what happens.

Thanks again. xx oo

i dont think its anything to worry about just yet my DS2 didnt walk till he was 16-17 months.

My first walked at 14 months and second at 16 months, also to all the mums that have kids that turn their feet in, we went to the podiatrist for this and try not to let them sleep on their belly as this affects the hip and turns them in and don't let them sit with legs in a W shape (don't know how else to explain that here) they should always sit with legs crossed or straight out in front and most kids will grow out if it.
my son who is now 16 months walked at 12 months... However baby is different my niece didnt walk until she was 16 months. I wouldnt be to concerned at all, they will walk in their own time. smile

My 2 year old son commando crawled at 5 months and didn't start crawling property until he was 9 months. I thought he was never going to crawl!

He was 20 months when he started to walk. We were getting concerned at 19.5 months when he wasn't walking, so our doctor checked him over and suggested shoes to help strengthen his weak foot muscles. Aftern wearing shoes for a few days he never stopped walking

I have certainly learnt that all children develop in their own time and you have to try not to compare yours to others.

Hi all,
Its funny though how much pressure people put on us as mothers/parents. My 14 month old daughter is not walking yet and all I hear from people is 'is she walking yet??' Its like leave her alone she will walk when she is ready!! Even the maternal health nurse makes you feel like something is wrong just because she isnt walking yet...but they get there in there own time. I hate the pressure put on you!!!!
True ladies???

Hi my DS is 23 months old. He only started walking around 15 & half. I also hate it when people say how big he is.
With his talking is not good. Only 6 words he will learn a word but then stops saying it. The word he saying is no.

I also feel there is a lot of pressure put on our kids.

Hi there, I wouldn't worry, every child is different. My son was at the other extreme, he walked at 8 months and everybody kept telling me he was too young, his bones wouldn't be formed properly yet and he'll end up bow legged etc, etc... all rubbish. He's fine. And your little ones will be fine too, they walk when THEY decide regardless of their environment.

My little guy is 15 months now and doesn't have many words, lots of sounds but not many words... I guess that'll come in time too.

Enjoy the peace and quiet while you can still keep things out of their reach!! xx

Hi,
my daughter didnt start walking on her own untill she was 20 months old.
She is now your typical active 3 year old. I am sure he will be fine, but if you are concerned make an appointment with you doctor.
smile
My daughter is 19 months and has just started walking, she's a bit wobbly but is getting better everyday. She is my fourth child, the others all walked much earlier. As long as they are becoming more mobile there is no need to worry.
Hi

If you have used a walker, it encourages kids to walk on their tippy toes. I think walkers are great for us as parents and I used them, but also be aware of time in walkers for this reason. Advise from the doctor with non walkers, do not put hard sole shoes on them unless you have been advised by a doctor. I think the best thing you can do if you are worried is take them to the doctor or to a podiatrist. I know the only reason we worry so much is you want to make sure you catch something if there is something wrong. I think parents are the best judge of something being wrong. Look at your child and think about the other things, do you think they are going along OK, not what other people say, if your answer is "no" or "not sure" off to the doctor. Don't worry about what other people think especially the doctor. What is one trip to be told nothing is wrong! My DS was walking at 16 months and my sisters DS was 20 months due to problems with his feet she is seeing a podiatrist now and he is 4. Lots more work to do with him yet but he will be fine. I have twin girls as well now and nither walking, one has very turned in feet, have not had her checked yet, I think whe is doing fine and if at some stage I think she is not I am going to take her straight to the podiatrist for an assessment.

Thanks

Deb

My DS started walking at 12 mths (he is 12 mths now) but he wasn't crawling AT ALL until 9 months and then rarely. He wasn't showing much interest in moving at all. Then one day he just decided he could walk. So after 2 months of lots of catching him he is now walking. Plenty of people were commenting that he was never going to crawl because he wouldn't even try and then when he started he only did it if he really had to.

They all get going at their own pace.

I think you know your baby better than anyone so unless you are worried don't even listen to anyone else. We are always looking out for issues so you will see it long before anyone else.
Hi, my baby girl started walking at 11 months. She is and has always been very active so we were not surprised that she was so early!!
i wouldnt worry about it too much,
my dd started on her 1st bday but she was always moving early, with her crawling etc. (her drive was living with two cats - she just HAD to reach them!) we know of lots of other bubs that didnt start until much later on, every child is just so different.
as for ppl asking if shes walking yet all the time - its a hard thing to take but let me just tell you my DD is very small for her age and has very little hair, i get it from everyone - she hasnt got much hair has she?? oh shes not a big baby is she? she looks like shes not even 1(18mnths). honestly if anyone is going to notice these things im sure it would be the babys parents - stop pointing it out!! lol
i guess it doesnt matter what our children do some people just feel the need to put their two cents in! wink
I wanted to bring up Baby sign language, i have done it with my dd and her words are realy good now!! she can say lots of things. it maybe worth a try if you are keen. i just went to www.babytalk.co.nz (if your in Aus' im sure they will have something there) and got the book (i later went to a meeting) and it realy is alot of fun once they get it!! and very cute!! - they talked about different learning styles of babies aswell, i learnt alot about my girl shes the type of child who will learn something by herself and when she has is just right she will show everyone else (like her walking - she wasnt a walk and fall child she just up and went one day)
but once again it shouldnt be a big deal yet, you still have plenty of time smile and every child is just so different!!
Hi there,
May be a few months later but if i were you i would get a second opinion because my son had in-turned feet and also my neice was pigenoed toed. With my neice when she went to the paediatric physio therapist they said that she wont like wearing shoes cos it is very uncomfortable for her. Also if your son may sit with his legs like a W (when kneeling) if so you should discourage this but i would see a paediatric physio therapist and they will set you on the right track. We went to St Giles (Free) im not sure where you are from & if it is Australia/Word Wide but they are fantastic. Good luck!
Hi, my ds was 15 months also and my dd was 16 months old. Everyone told me that this was late but it hasn't stopped them at all. They are just as quick and active as the other kids there own age.
hi there. my 3rd daughter is nearly 19mths old and not walking yet. when we took her for her 18 mth needles and checkup the doctor was worried because her right foot is turned outwards quite a bit . he suggested we go for hip xrays (nothing showed up on them) now we have a referral to the WCH in adelaide to see the pyhsio led ortho clinic because of her foot. when i asked the doctor what causes the foot to turn outwards, he told me it is due to the hips (even though there apparently isn't a problem). so i guess we will just have to wait and see. she can't get to a standing position from the ground without holding on to something.she does walk around furniture, with a walker and if you hold her hand. i reckon personally there is nothing wrong and that she will do it when she is ready,. i guess we will find out next friday.

Hi all, my DD is 14mths today. What do people classify as walking? My daughter is not walking around unaided all the time but can go from one place to another without holding on to anything and even stands for long periods without falling down, so to me, yes she is walking?? I think at the moment it is just quicker to crawl.

My chiro told me that the longer they crawl the more they are working their brains, it uses more to crawl than it does to walk, it is the first thing they get victims of stroke to do to work out their brains!

Hi There,
I had immense pressure from my other friends with babies younger than my Daugther saying 'isn't she walking yet?' 'maybe you should take her to a pediatrician' - I was beginning to get very upset. I didn't listen to anyone, and in the end at almost 23 months old - a week before my birthday she up and walked!

So I completely agree that everyone thinks your child is 'behind' when they are not walking when other younger children are!! smile
It's reassuring to hear that my little Miss isn't the only late walker around!

She is now 20 mo's. She walks behind anything that will move but just doesn't have the confidence to let go. She pulls herself up on furniture but doesn't stand up if there isn't anything there to hold on to.

She was reviewed by the paed at 18mo's who wasn't the slightest bit concerned but did say if she wasn't walking at 20 mo's he would refer her to physio - so off we go next week to the physio.

Will be interesting to see what they say and if there is anything else we can do to encourage her to walk as I do agree, the comments from others do get a little old!
My 1st child is 10 months old and she is walking. she has been walking for about 1 month.
My 1st daughter bum shuffled at 13 months and didn't walk until she was 16.5 months....she just didn't have the confidence to let go while holding on. She is now 2 and a half years and you would never know....
My son who is now 3, was walking around furniture at 9 months and walking without holding on by around 10-11months. BUT my daughter who is 1 didn't start walking around furniture until 11months and is only just now trying to walk without holding on.
I have noticed that she too walks on her toes and has slightly in-turned feet, I might try putting shoes on her as suggested in previous posts. As I too think she may not have the muscle strength.
What a relief to read these posts! I thought that there may be something wrong, as my son walked so early. Just goes to show that every bub really is different. Thanks everyone! smile
