my little Lilly is almost 5 months old & has in the last few weeks started smacking herself in the head especially when she is tired. sometimes she hits herself quiet hard. i try to hold her hands to make her stop but as soon as i let go she starts again. does anyone else seen their baby do this? is it "normal"?

Hi my son didn't do that but he started shaking his head side to side which kind of freaked me out for a bit. My first impression with your 5 month old is that she is exploring the use of her limbs and what they can do. Does she hurt herself by doing it or is not fazed when she hits herself. If she is not fazed then I wouldn't be surprised if it lasts a few days or more then stops. It can be disturbing to see them do some of the strange things they do but they are still coming to grips with understanding what their bodies can do. You mention she does it when she is tired, perhaps she is trying to rub her eyes but hasn't quite got the knack of it yet?? Of course I am no expert but maybe give it a few weeks to a month and see if it stops.
Hi, here's some info: Body-rocking, head-rolling and head-banging
It's (usually) "normal" behaviour. My bub started doing it at around 4-5 months to keep himself awake whilst breast feeding. Then he started shaking his head to keep himself awake at bed time. His latest thing is body rocking.
They often do it for a few weeks then go onto doing something else.
