Help! DD won't stop scratching her eczema
What can I do to stop her?? I have just cut her nails to make sure she can't do too much damage but her eczema has flared up after the weather warmed up over the weekend and its come up badly the poor thing sad I just have some cream I got from the chemist to put on but now she keeps scratching and the only way I can stop her is by holding her hands away, which feels incredibly cruel since we all know what its like when u need to scratch an itch...I don't know what to do I'm new to all this eczema stuff...I think I'm going to have to hold her tonight because every time I put her down she scratched straight away and her neck she has already made one spot bleed a little sad any ideas? who's been through this and what did u do??
I put socks on DS's hands to stop him itching so much - he could still rub at the itchy spots but he wasn't "digging" with his nails if that makes sense. I must admit I only did that after he scratched his face really badly. He ended up with gouges on both cheeks and kept scratching the scabs off so things became infected etc, after that I made sure that the parts he wanted to itch were covered or that his hands were covered so he couldn't do so much damage again. Now that he's older its a bit harder to do that though so we're just trying to keep on top of the eczema flare ups so that they don't get so itchy.

I used to babysit a little girl who had very severe asthma, allergies, sensitive skin, etc... the works. Every night before bed I had to lather her up in her eczema cream and put long socks over her arms and legs, even in the summer! She had a fan blowing directly onto her so she didn't overheat. It seemed so awful for her but her skin was in such a poor condition that there was no other way to deal with it! I hope your DS doesn't suffer as much as this little girl did sad Good luck!
My little fella broke out at about 10 weeks, still has patches at almost 5. We know to avoid certain foods, heat, rough clothing, etc... But the socks on the hands was great. Dermeeze or QV oil in the bath, then the ointment all over them after bath. Everything ends up oily, but keeping their skin well hydrated is the key. We had a special cream too for bad spots, but the dr stressed prevention is better as prolonged use of the cream can thin the skin. Also if he was really itchy and distressed he said a bit of anti-histamine (zyrtec, etc...) helps.
Here's some good info on eczema management. Wet wraps/dressings can help relieve itchiness.
