Baby Powder Rss

Ok Silly Question I know ... but here goes.

Am first time mum, have 4 week old baby boy. I was told that I should be putting powder on him charming little bottom at every change.

What I normally do, is use quality baby wipes and huggies newborn nappies. He is changed regulary, and has no rash, or anything.

But I have never used powder. Should I?? honestly, no one ever mentioned it before.

Thanks
No. Dont use it unless a dr says too. It will dry them out too much
using baby powder is very old school...

never used it with my DD, i was advised my midwife and doctor not to apply is to my DD's private area as it can cause BIG problems....not sure if it is the same with boys.

but my DD never had a nappy rash, so using baby wipes every change must have been a good thing smile

Funny how not many seem to use it but everyone gives it to you for a gift. I never used it once for my DS and have only got it out recently because i thought he had tinea or something and the chemist told me to use it for in between his toes to make sure they are getting dried properly and to stop it getting so damp in his shoes all day.

I just tend to use a barrier cream like sudocream if i think my DD needs a preventative measure if shes been a bit sensitive in the nappy area. If theres no problem then dont worry, i think its more from times when they used the old style nappies etc
I too use sudoCream but only when neccessary, plus this is what they used on my ds when he was in nciu. I think nowadays baby powder isn't used as much ? so I say don't worry smile Maybe check with your dr
I was given 3 large Johnson's baby powder as gifts before bub was born, I still have 2 and a half left and he's almost 12 months! I've only started using it up in the last few months after bath time. Because he's wriggling so much more now and grabbing at whatever he can get at nappy and pj time is a struggle. So I started a game up....once he's dried and nappy's finally on I'll say 'do you want some snow?' and then I'll sprinkle some from up high onto his tummy and legs. He loves it, less wriggles and lots of giggles laugh
I hate baby powder. It is bad for their skin, it goes everywhere and it smells bad. If you feel you have to use it, use cornflour. Its the same, just minus all the chemicals.
I just dry their bum after with a cloth or makeup pad or use rash cream if necessary. I reckon they would breath in some of the tiny particles from the powder so I don't like it - just me.

I used to use baby powder on DS after his bath/shower until he got an infection under his foreskin about a year or so ago? Stopped using it as there was white stuff underneath it, so thought it might be that causing it. Anyway DF used it when I was working evenings and it started to get infected again so definately was the problem. I think it's once the foreskin starts being less attached to the penis that stuff can get stuck under there (ie. baby powder) I wont use it with bub no.2 at all. I agree that sudocrem is the best thing for rashes smile
Congrats on your new bub. I've never used it on my boys either. Full of chemicals that really isn't kind to babies sensitive skin and if there's no rash I would say it's not necessary.
Just for a different opinion....
I use baby powder!
I find it is excellent for for drying out all the rolls, under chubby chins and drying a damp bottom after wiping.
I dont use normal talc baby powder tho, i didnt like the thought of putting ground up rock on DD lol. So instead we use J&J Cornstarch powder, it works well and smells great.
I used baby powder every now and then when my son was little to help dry him out if he was staring to get a rash. I only used the cornflour one after I found out how dangerous and toxic talc really is!

I also agree that a barrier cream such as sudocrem is great for nappy rash.
I was told by my midwife to never use baby powder as the fine particals can get into their lungs and cause irritations and asthma. I have avoided it for this reason.

My toddler rides rear facing! It's 5 TIMES safer in an accident than a forward facing car seat, and cradles the delicate neck and spine. Click the link below to read more about the safety benefits, your child deserves it!

I've used cornflour occasionally but haven;t found it needed very often. I would never use baby powder......

the only thing I use baby powder for is to stop ants getting in the house smile
Thanks guys. I love all the resons for and against. Glad to know that I am not making a mega boo boo..*grin*

Cheers
Tammy
I agree with some others, I wouldn't use baby powder - ever even if advised.
I'd go with a natural product anyway.

After each bath I use paw paw ointment (all natural) but use quality wipes and huggies nappies also.

Never had any issues with redness or rashes. =]
