Getting car seat installed? Rss

I see on here often people saying that they had their car seat "installed" , i dont understand... we have 5 cars/trucks so have moved car seats pretty much daily since day one. The seat belt just goes through it and clicks in.

Do people pay others to do that? and if they do is it "stuck" in that car??

excuse my ignorance! im just confused what people mean by "installed" as all 3 of our car seats including the capsule just used the seat belt and its super easy to do.

hope someone can clear this up for me smile
Some people do pay to get it installed, some hospitals do it or there are companies that can do it to for a small fee. We never got ours installed as like you said it is fairly straight forward, however the company we bought it from told us to come past and they would check it was done properly and they said it was exactly the way it should be.
The very 1st time our capsule went in I paid $20 to have it installed. It wasn't as simple as clicking in the seatbelt, my car actually needed to have the anchor point attached. With a great big huge belly I really couldn't be bothered climbing around the back seat of a Corolla with tools to do it myself. Since then I have always put it back myself if I had to take it out, plus in our new car it is much simpler to fit them onto the anchor points anyway.
Oh ok I see, I didint realize some seats needed anchor points , don't remember anyone telling me about them when we went seat shopping. Thanks for clearing that up! hehe I feel stupid coz I see lots of people talking about it and I didn't understand.

Most cars these days come with them, otherwise you can buy them.
I am fine with it now iv done in 500 times but when my son was first born we had no idea. Its more about the bolt being correct i think, when we moved our son from the middle to the side we had him connected to the luggage thingy, which we thought was an anchor point. The reason we found out was because we hired a capsule from kidsafe and they install them in the car for you and it turned out we needed to hire an extra bolt for our sons seat too. So i am really glad now that we did get it checked and also glad we had only just moved his seat over to make room for DD. We didnt have to pay, im pretty sure they will check them for you for free
Ok I guess I'm still confused , what bolt ?? Our car seats just have the seat belt through the holes in the back. Our capsule was the same but the seat belt went around he back and through the holes in the front... Maybe we just have different seats , im in nz , maybe we don't have them here?

unsure i think this is why people get them installed or checked. I dont know but i wouldnt think there would be a lot of difference between nz and aus. Dont your car seats have a long belt connnection from the back usually at the top that looks like it needs to attach somewhere usually in boot or behind back seat?
Now IM confused.
The seatbelt itself isn't enough to hold the capsules/carseats. They need to be bolted. How has yours not got a bolt.

Even booster seats have harnesses that you need to bolt in ......

i have a friend that doesn't bolt her carseat in cause her dp doesn't think its nessasary blink but i told her that it has to bolted in cause thats whats safe

I don't see how people can think not bolting a car seat in is ok?? Surely they can see the seat moving around when they are driving? We have 3 car seats in our car 2 maxi riders and another one and all 3 are bolted in there is no way I would risk my children's life by not installing the seat properly.

I bet your friend would soon see how necessary it is if they were in an accident and the child went flying out of the car!

yeah i know hey its not a very good idea but you cant make them do it can ya
we have too bolts so if we ever need to go in someone elses car we can bolt the carseat in cause it is just common sense to do it

Argh now im stressing my son is almost 2 and none of our 2 seats or capsule have come with a bolt? Nor do they have any strap... Instructions just say how to thread the seat belt. ... I'm going to do some investigating now!!!
There's no long strap at the top of the seat, where the head is but at the back, with a metal piece attached to the end of it?

Thats what it looks like in a station wagon or 4WD style car ^

All car seats/boosters/capsules have straps with a clip at the end to attach to the anchor point. Most cars have anchor points in them already but alot of carseats come with the bolts that you can have installed.

^ Often in a sedan they are on the back dash area, sometimes covered with a cap

i was thinking it would be clever to add a photo to help

I found this it might help put your mind at ease:

Q 3. Does NZ Law requires that all baby car seats must use Tether Strap or Anchor Bolt?

A: No, NZ Law does not require that baby car seats must use Tether Strap or Anchor Bolt. All Car Seats can be used in New Zealand legally once they comply with one or more approved international standards (Please see answers for Question 1). Some Car seats are designed to use anchor bolt, some Car Seats are designed to be installed by Seat Belt only. Please see User Manuals.

Nope nothing... I'll upload a pic if I can figure out how smile all our seats 2 identical and one capsule are the same brand ... Probably the problem! ... Pic to come
This seat

It does say it has no teater strap or bolt. But I can't get a pic of what it is like at the back. Thanks giggles that info is helpful so they don't have to have one if they are designed not to.

Thanks!! I might buy a new one that is like that!! smile haha 4 seats for one child ... But probably best to get one. I'm so glad I asked my stupid question now!! You have all been very helpful but I do feel pretty stupid, I don't know how I never knew about that strap and or bolt!! smile
By the looks of it seats without bolts are allowed in NZ, don't know about Oz, buti couldn't imagine not having the bolt. The seatbelt is just not enough in my opinion. I find the bolt so important.

Yeh, the seat has never moved or anythig when driving around. But it's a bit strange that I can be a parent for this long and not even know about the bolt!
Yes you are right, some in NZ do not need the tether bolt, but if it has it, they need to be used.. most baby capsals that i have seen in NZ do not have them, 50% of car seats (9kg-18kg) have them, and almost none of the boosters have them, I find my car seats fine without them, but wish my boosters had them as I notice when they outgrow the 5 point harness with only a lap belt they move around, and I do have H harness for them, but it still wobbles a bit.. (unfortunately my car still is the safest for these children as most of their parents don't use boosters once they hit 5, or if under 5 they are in those horrible foam boosters)

Thanks!! I might buy a new one that is like that!! smile haha 4 seats for one child ... But probably best to get one. I'm so glad I asked my stupid question now!! You have all been very helpful but I do feel pretty stupid, I don't know how I never knew about that strap and or bolt!! smile

You can still easily remove the carseat from each vehicle! The bolt part is actually attatched to the car and the teather strap actually clips onto the bolt. So it is not actually bolted in.
So no need to buy four. Just another step required in installing or removing the seat from the vehicle!

The only thing you need four of is the actual anchore bolt which can be purchased individually. Not sure how much they are as our cars already have three factory installed in each vehicle. Can't see that htey would be more than $10.
If your seat meets the European requirements it does NOT need tethering and isn't tested with one. I would prefer ONE standard to be used worldwide, but as there isn't, I'd choose the European standard over the others any day of the week.

If you buy a seat in NZ that has the Australian/NZ standard they all come with a tether which must be used. We imported a booster from Germany for DS1 as we were NOT impressed with the lack of choice in NZ and we actually brought one back for DS2 from the UK 5 months ago as the same seat here cost nearly 3 times as much as it did there.

oh, i realise i dont have to buy 4 seats i ment he will then have 4 seats if i buy him a new one... i cant just add a a bolt coz there is no part of the seat to bolt down as it was designed not to have one so will have to buy a new seat if i want a bolted down seat.

but i am finding that lots of people that i know have the same seat and none have bolts and no problems, i guess because they are german they are made differently but as another peorson said they are designed and tested with out the bolt or strap so i guess its fine.

still might buy one with a bolt tho... not sure smile hehe thanks for ya help smile
