Disposable Nappies vs Cloth Nappies Rss

Hi

I only just realised that cloth nappies have little clips on them and you dont have to fold them to make a nappy, they already are in nappy shape, I even seen a pair that had monkeys all over them, absolutely amazing.
With my first I used disposables because they were easier at the time and becuase I did not want to fold cloth nappies. I am now expecting my second, due in January. What is everyone's opinions on cloth vs disposable??
I love cloth nappies. here is a good place to start for more info.

I've used cloth nappies from the start with DD. I was given a bunch of pea pods at my baby shower which I loved. I also don't mind the ebay ones- happy baby and babyland brands, I just suggest doubling up with inserts.

Oh what inserts do they use? do all inserts fit all brands of cloth nappies? I have been reading info from the links that were provided (Thank you OC1246) and its all so confusing, so many different types. How about when you go out? You would have to carry around a dirty nappy blink Im worried about wasting a heap of money on cloth nappies just to find out they leak or I dont like them just to go back to buying disposables.

Pea pods use bamboo inserts- I find these very absorbant and only use 1 per nappy. They are square shaped and you fold them in thirds to slot into the pocket at the back of the nappy. With the cheaper ebay nappies they either use bamboo or cotton- they are only a single oval shape and I don't find them as thick so I buy extra and use 2 per nappy (wouldn't use 2 on a newborn though- makes the nappy too big!). Check out ebay for modern cloth napppies and inserts and you'll see what I mean.

When I go out I either take nappy sacks (the scented kind) or pea pods come with their own wet bags. If I'm going to be out for an extended period of time and know DD hasn't pooed I will put her in a disposable. I also use a disposable at night.

Lots of suppliers do a sample pack, so you get 4 or 5 of different styles so you can see what/if you like them. I've also seen wet bags as part of the samples too (that's what you do with the dirty ones wink )

There are 3 main different styles:

All in Ones (AIO) these would be the easiest to use as they are just the one piece. he downside is that they take a long time to dry and (depending on the brand) you cannot add extra inserts to make them more absorbent.

Pockets - these have a shell with an opening to put inserts in which are usually either microfibre, bamboo or hemp. These are quicker to dry as the nappy can be taken apart, also you can increase the absorbancy by adding inserts.

Fitteds - there are 2 parts to te anppy the 'absorbant nappy that goes on like a disposable and a cover that goes over the top.

I recommend trying a few different brands and styles to work out what works for you, babies come in different shapes and sizes and an MCN that works for one baby might leak on another.

I use MCNs during the day and a disposable at night and have found this works really well for me, there are many that use MCNs full time its just a matter of findng what works best for you.
If you wanna avoid nappy rashes, it's always better to go with cloth diapers. But if it leaks often or makes a mess out of your linens, then maybe you should consider using disposable nappies. I've always used disposable ones with my 2 kids (one is now turning 4 and the other still turning 3 months old). I just clean their bums real well and whenever they get ... rashes, I just use zinc oxide and calamine on them. So far my 2-month old hasn't had a nappy rash yet smile And my toddler hasn't had a nappy rash since he was like 2 years old grin Besides, he's no longer on diapers now.
Thanks everyone, I have been doing some cloth nappy research and I am getting excited, at the moment I'm liking the sound of the pocket nappies, but also I am going to get a sample pack to play around with. But with this overload of info, I have another question, which nappy is the one where you only need to change the liner not the whole nappy if the nappy isnt soiled??

mine are like that, they are called "Pop Ins" they have domes so can just pop the insert in and out if its not super dirty I can often only go through one outer a day. sorry not too sure what exact style they are classed as....maybe pocket....but if you look at Snazzypants.co.nz they have them there and I'm sure it will say what style it is.
Itti bitti also do the same thing from what I remember.

Sounds like an all in one.
I stocked up on a few different varieties of cloth nappies when I was pregnant, and so far I've loved using them! The only problem has been that my mother-in-law gave me a HUGE carton of disposables as a present, and my big 9lb 13oz girl is almost too big for them already - I feel obliged to use them up before she grows any more! To answer your question, I've used so far - and loved - Little Lambs(a NZ brand that are very neat and trim, and wash beautifully), a Motherease cotton nappy (bit big yet, but the Rikki cover is fabulous), a BabyBeeHinds All-in-one (pretty good, but take a while to dry), and flannel squares. So far, the flannel squares and the Little Lambs cotton nappy are coming out on top; the LL PU cover goes beautifully over the squares, too. With the Aussie dollar so strong, the LL's are very reasonably priced at the moment, too, and they have free postage.

Mio are like that- you can get them from Target. I didn't like the idea of just changing the insert- I like to start fresh every time smile

Thanks everyone for your help,I found out yester day that I am having a girl smile so I have ordered a trial pack from baby beehinds, which included a multi-fit, a all in two or pop in (whichever name you call it) and a fitted bamboo nappy with cover, I'm excited can't wait for them to arrive.
