Eczema on 9 month old Rss

Hi everyone.

My 9 month old DS was 6 days overdue when born and his skin was so terribly dry and peeling that there was skin everywhere for a couple months after. But now he has eczema all over his belly, his neck, inside his elbows and behind his knees. I had it severely as a child as well and all the things I used to help mine just aren't helping him and he scratches so much he makes himself bleed.

I have so far used QV bath oil, now using pinetarsol. I used dermaveen lotion to help his dry skin initially but hasn't been of any help, the went to moo goo eczema cream which keeps the skin from drying out but isn't helping to relieve the problem itself. I've now been using lucas' paw paw ointment but again it's really not helping to rid the problem and he is still scratching like crazy.

I don't know what else to use. I used vinegar in the bath as a kid to help relieve the itch but it did sting a little so have been reluctant to try the same thing on DS. I have switched washing powders and have been careful with what else I use but again not making any difference. I make sure he wears mostly if not all 100% cotton clothing as well.

I'm at a loss of what to do to help him. It's so frustrating for me and I'm not the one scratching. I will be taking him ti the doctors to when I take DD for her test results so will ask them as well but thought someone here might have a suggestion for me.

Sorry for the novel and TIA for any suggestions you might have.

Might be a dumb question but have you taken him to a paediatrician? Sounds like if its this severe you need some professional advice.

Only thing I can offer is perhaps his diet is whats causing the flare ups, maybe its what he's eating.

That or something he's coming into contact with like washing powder, fabric softner, clothing, your perfume.

I haven't taken him anywhere as yet but have mentioned it the the gp. He has only just started on solids as he wasn't interested in it earlier so it's not food as it's been around since he was born.

I did change my washing powder to omo sensitive to see how he goes with that and im careful with softeners etc. I didn't even use softener when he was first born so I'm ruling that out I think. Oh and I also don't wear perfume as I'm allergic to it so will only wear a small amount if I go out and that's extremely rare.

It seems to be more like it was with myself and was just there for no particular reason but driving us both insane.

Thanks for your advice about seeing a paediatrician. I'll speak to gp about it when I take DS & DD in this week.
have you tried using a cotton sock or stocking stuffed with natural pure oatmeal as a soap in the bath. just gently rub it on the skin like you would use a loofa, ive heard it can relieve the itching a little and has moisturising properties. as a pp said maybe its also something in his diet thats causing the flare ups? it sounds like your doing everything you can for now so id def be seeking professional advise asap even if you can get to a Dr or a Ped maybe try the chemist for some temp help? poor darling hope you get it sorted out soon sad X
Maybe you could try wet wraps? But I agree, see a specialist.
Thank you so much for your suggestions. I'll be reading about the wet wraps tonight and be definately seeing the doctor.
I have eczma and so does my 2 of my kids.

You need a script for Diprosone ointment. used 3 x a day while is really bad and then daily. QV bath oil and Aveeno moisturiser.

This combination has been a winner for us. My best mate is a dermatologist and this is her recipe for eczma sufferers.

Thank you very much for that. I have used the QV bath oil but with other creams so will speak to the doctor about the Diprosone.

Thanks again
Hey abby"s_mummy. You should go see a specialist. Meanwhile, you can read these ... for babies with eczema wink I hope they'll be able to help you manage your baby's eczema!
Dear Abby's mummy

My daughter who is now 13 has suffered from eczma and asthma since she was a couple of weeks old you name it I have tried it. I have been to every skin specialist and tried every cream and diet.

I had skin patch tests done, my daughter is allergic to dustmite did everything suggested changed bed sheets regularly, matress protectors vacumed, bath oils, hydrocortisone creams etc etc. The eczma was very distressing for my daughter and also for me as it doesn't matter what you use it doesn't seem to work.

I visited the Allergy Unit at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital where we decided to try Allergen Vaccines to build up my daughters immune system to dustmite this was done over a 3 year period either by drops or injection which by local gp administered, my daughter started this when she was 9 and has now finished the treatment.

Over the last 13 years I made sure my daughters skin was well moisturized with either QV or Cetaphil creams and bath oils she never uses soap and washes in these creams and has had to use cortisone creams on a regular basis. I strongly recommend wet dressings as this stops little ones scratching of a night with heaps of moisturizer Dermeze is good. My daughters skin now at 13 is and after the Allergen Vaccines 10 times better than what it was. Although she still has outbreaks but she knows if she doesn't moisturize her skin, it becomes very dry so daily moisturizing and showers with moisturizer instead of soap and cortisone if needed. Just to add I also had eczema when i was a teenager disappeared and has now come back at 46 years of age.

I hope this has been of some help for you.
My 6.5 month old had terrible excema also. I changed her formula from S26 to Karicare and it almost completely disappeared. I also tried the moo goo and paw paw ointment prior to that so i feel your pain. Once you find the cause, it's much easier to manage. Good luck.

Hi
This was a lot of help thank you.
I have been using dermeze for the bath now and also the ointment on his skin a minimum of 3 times per day plus other moisturisers every other nappy change. It seems to be helping somewhat. He doesn't tend to scratch at night as he has always slept on his stomach so he doesn't have access to it to scratch in his sleep and I think the pressure helps relieve some of the itching as thats what helped mine as a kid.

Sounds like you have had a very rough time of it with your daughter. I'm glad to see it is improving for her. I think mine lasted til about the same age but I now get dermatitis myself instead.

Crethar- I hadn't even considered the formula he is on. He's on S26 as well. My daughter was on that and i'd never had any sorts of problems with her and just didn't even consider it when thinking about my son's eczma. Thanks for that.
The only thing I would add to all the very good suggestions already made is to ensure you use 100% cotton clothing, the softer feeling the better and try to avoid overheating bub. Both these factors made a significant difference to my 2 yr old's eczema. Oh, also, try and keep bub's nails trimmed short so they do less damage when she does scratch.

I try to put him in cotton as much as possible which is basically all the time. I keep his nails short too so he can't draw blood or anything too.
The over heating part i'll have to keep in mind with the weather warming up here.
Thanks.
We've also had problems with Eczema (my daughter is 8 months old). The best thing we've found so far is QV oil (which I've read you're already using) and the 'Bod for Bubs' range - especially Bubbaloo's miracle dry skin balm. We'd tried Moo Goo and Paw Paw too, with no luck. Maybe this might work for you too? You can buy it online. Good luck!
My son has just turned one and has had eczema since he was about 5 months old, he also has food allergies which contribute to his skin condition. We use Eumocream to moisturise his skin and Advantan cortisone cream for flare ups. On advise from the Allergist we bath him every second day in water only but am going to try QV oil because a lot of people seem to recommend it. I also have a garment called "scratch sleeves" which is like a bolero jacket with silk mittens so when he scratches he doesn't break the skin. It has saved our lives!!! You can buy them online from UK, very cheap ad they post fairly quickly. The website is www.scratchsleeves.co.uk. Good luck!!
yeah QV bath oil & cream are good. but don't use their bath wash or intensive moisturiser. my son's skin flared up dramatically with the latter products. apart from cortisone creams, moo goo is awesome. quick bath & not too hot also
my 7m.o also sctaches like crazy, even though his skin is now manageable. don't wast money on expensive scatch sleeves. i just use mittens or old baby socks. so he rubs, but can't break the skin

Hi there, best to go and get him tested so you can work out what angle to treat it from whether it's dietary or environmental. Same problem with my niece and it turned out to be dust-mites. Hers was really bad and used to bleed and get infected. Her mum has to wash her bedding and hot iron it every day and vacuum and dust the house like a crazy person. But you can never completely eradicate dust-mites. So my niece is now on a small daily dose of antihistamine which is making a huge difference as well as steroid cream during flare ups.

I know some people are a bit anti-meds esp the steroid creams but when they are this severe and it starts to adversely affect their daily life and make them miserable then I feel the meds are necessary.

All the best, hope you can get on top of it soon.

We tried socks but he pulled them off, the glory of the scratch sleeves is that he can't pull them off as it is like a jacket. Maybe my son is a bit different as he is allergic to a lot of things and this causes havoc with his skin. He only has Elecare formula and no food at all at the moment. He has just turned one and I still use the sleeves and they only cost about $10.00 although I would pay more to ease his scratching.
