flat head Rss

my 3 month old has a flat head (it is symmetrical) from constantly sleeping/lying on her back. has anyone else experienced this and did the flatness sort itself out (as I keep getting assured), and if so what did you do to help it?
DS head was quite flat. I didn't think much of it until people starting pointing it out, then I started worrying about it. I think it was just extra noticeable because he was bald. My plunket nurse also assured me that it would sort it self out, and they don't worry about them unless the little dip that forms just above the neck doesn't occur. She told me to turn his head to the side after he was fast asleep, alternating between each side. Although he usually does this on his own. I was still concerned so took him to the doctor and got our chiropractor to look at, both said he was fine. DS is now 7 months, and is still pretty much bald. The flat spot is hardly noticeable now, I reckon this is because the bones in his skull have become harder and he sleeps in a range of positions now, including on tummy.
My little man had a damaged muscle in his neck from birth which caused him to favour his right side & get a bad flat spot. because it was on one side I had to help him learn to turn his head to the left more as well as lying him on his left side while awake & supervised on the ground or play gym and turn his head to the left while sleeping.
what I learnt was that pressure on the scalp will make it flat at the back but will grow at the front & anywhere there is not regular pressure stopping it. So for my boy that meant the front could have grown more on one side giving him a disfigured forehead! But in the middle it should be fine. make sure you do plenty of tummy time to get pressure off the back & you will find as he gets more active & spends less & less time lying on it it will have the chance to grow & be nice & round!
I know what you mean about noticing more because hes bald. Mine too! He now has very fine hair, not very long but has a bald spot at the back on the left side becuase of the stuff I do for his flat head on the right side! haha! strangest little head ever! roll eyes
I had a similar problem with my little one and used a Mije pillow under supervision. It helped heaps and he is 17months now and no flat head. Please note pillows are not recommended for babies so use under supervision only.
My GP recommended Mije pillow and tummy time both under supervision.
I started taking DD to the chiropractor initially to see if he could help with her constant gas pains and he has been working on sorting out her flat head also as he said some of the plates were overlapping from constanly lying flat. There is a noticable difference already from what he has done. I think if it is not too bad though, it does eventually osrt itself out but I know many adults who clearly have a flat head at the back still!
I had the flat head issue to and i wish i new about the pillows, would have made life alot easier, but my GP advised to sleep her on her side between wedges so she couldnt roll to correct the issue, and the pediatrician agreed with the side sleep, if i turned her head while on her back she would just move it back.
I used a sleep wedge and he has a perfectly round head from sleeping him side to side - most people I know when they notice flat head and get onto it they come right but others that haven't don't go away!! Maybe try a wedge?
My little boy, now 8 months was a premie - which, I didn't know means more susceptible to flat head syndrome. His head was really lobe sided at 3 months. I bought a baby lounger that is filled with beans to replace the rocker I was using. It kept his head straight and was soft. By 5 months his head was starting to look normal again. i bought mine from wassco.com.au
