My girl has never had the same sleeping pattern

Hi Maree I have a 6mth old girl who has never had the same sleeping pattern.Every night she gets bathed then a massage at the same time, feed then bed, however she wakes at all different times.Eg. Saturday - slept from 7 - 7 def no complaints there (but this very rarely happens about 7 times all up in the 6mths)Sunday - Woke 4am then 7amMonday - Woke 10am, 2.30 then 5.50am

Is there a reason for this - am I doing something wrong?...She has a feed each time too - a full feed then a change then bed - Brodie does not complain going back to bed - never in my bed always in her own room in her cot.

I have tried not feeding her when she wakes and just giving her a cuddle until I could put her down again but then she will wake again in another hr and not go down until she does get a feed.

I dont mind waking once a night - but was wondering why the times are always different and then some nights she wakes more than once.

Thank you for your time

Answer: Hi Paulette,
Brodie will be growing and her needs changing with this. From about 6 months you could expect a baby to sleep 7pm to 7am without an overnight feed but she may still be hungry so give her the benefit of the doubt for a little longer. At this age a 10pm rollover is good because it gives you confidence that she is not hungry when she wakes later and you can go straight into settling techniques, knowing she has had a feed at 10pm.

It is most important that you always settle her awake into her cot so she learns to sleep independently otherwise if she falls asleep then placed into the cot she will wake on her light sleep (as we all do) and look for your arms/ comfort/feed to return to sleep. Imagine you went to sleep in your bed and woke up in the bath! you would need to go back to your comfortable bed to return to sleep. You could try our settling techniques for settling Brodie awake into the cot.

Cheers, Maree
