At the moment I crush the tablet and put it in 20ml of milk

Hi Glenda,
My daughter is only 8 weeks old and has been prescribed Losec tablets for Reflux. She has a quarter in the morning. She is bottlefed and at the moment I crush the tablet and put it in 20ml of milk give that to her then fill the same bottle up with the rest of the AR formula. Is this the best way or can you suggest another way. I know your not suppose to crush the tablet, but I don`t know what else to do when she is so young. Also, not all the time but she is still being quiet a bit sick with a burp after and during the feed. Many thanks

Glend...
Answer: Hi,
Thanks for contacting our organisation, and congratulations on the birth of your daughter. Well done for getting the diagnosis so early and also for getting started on some treatment.

I know it isn’t easy to give Losec to a young baby, but it is possible. As you said, crushing Losec is not the best way. Some parents have success by dissolving the Losec in a very small amount of water and giving it to their baby off a spoon. I have heard of babies as young as six weeks being able to manage this, but if your baby can’t, that is fine- they are all different. You could try using a syringe that has a wide nozzle- so something like a 10ml syringe, or the nurofen or panadol syringes. Some people put the Losec in the syringe and then add a small amount of water and very gently shake. Try to give it in the side of her mouth, and if any of the granules come out, then just gently push them back in. Everyone seems to find a technique that seems to work best for them.

Adding it to her milk is going to make it less effective- we asked the manufacturer what they recommended, and they said to use water, pear or apple puree. They said not to use breastmilk or formula as it wasn’t the right pH and this makes the Losec less effective (so does crushing it).

If you are still having problems giving her the Losec, then you can have it compounded into a suspension by a compounding pharmacy (there are some online ones in Australia if you don’t have any in your area). This is more expensive, but some parents prefer this way. If you do use a suspension, remember to shake the bottle really well each time. Also, find out what the shelf life is as sometimes they can be very short, sometimes only fourteen days (it all depends on what suspension agent they use).

Losec is an acid suppressant medication. It doesn’t stop reflux and it won’t stop vomiting. The being sick with a burp is something you may not be able to control, sorry. The Losec will hopefully control the pain and discomfort that can be a part of reflux.

I hope that information helps,
Glenda
