Is there is a natural medicine for this?

Hello Glenda my 3 month old has just been put on Zantac Syrup for reflux I was wondering if there is a natural medicine for this I can speak to my docter about?

Glend...
Answer: Hi,
Well done on getting your baby diagnosed with reflux, and thank you for contacting our organisation.

Zantac has been used for many years and is considered to be safe for babies to use but I do understand your concern about using medication. It isn’t something that you would have stopped to consider, I’m sure, when you were pregnant.

There are lots of different ways that reflux can be treated, and there are lots of lifestyle changes you can perhaps do that may help (as well as give zantac or natural medicine). These types of strategies can include:

  • Keeping baby upright as much as possible throughout the feed and for half an hour afterwards (avoid putting baby in the seated position in that time as it can increase pressure on the tummy and cause more reflux)
  • Try smaller feeds more often
  • Avoid overfeeding
  • Consider thickened feeds (this can be used for both breast and bottle fed babies – by using AR formula or commercial food thickners to thicken the formula or to give as a spoonful before or after a feed)
  • If food sensitivity is suspected, consider trialing hypoallergenic formulas or if breastfeeding, you may choose to remove certain foods from your own diet e.g. dairy, soy. (Please note, if you do remove foods from your diet, please seek medical advice and supervision from a dietitian)
  • Avoid tight nappies and elastic waistbands
  • Change baby’s nappy before a feed rather than after
  • Offer play time and tummy time before a feed if possible
  • Consider offering baby a dummy if you are comfortable with the idea

As for natural medicines, I have heard of using chamomile teas or other baby teas, slippery elm, digestive enzymes, aloe vera (and if breastfeeding, for the mother to drink the chamomile tea or eat ginger). If you are interested in using any of these products I would recommend talking to a naturopath.

Sometimes natural medicines aren’t enough and doctor prescribed medications are needed. Whatever you choose to do, I think it is good that you are going to discuss this with your doctor, and I hope you find something that helps your baby feel more comfortable.
