I`ve been advised of my iron being very, very low
Hello Leanne, I am 30 weeks and have just been advised of my iron being very, very low. I am really shocked as I thought I was eating correctly. My ob said I am not anemic but very low levels and have been advised to take fgf tabs an hour before my evening meal. My questions are:
Do I cut down on my blackmores preg tabs from 2 a day to only 1?
What effect will this low iron have on my baby as I feel as though I have let it down?
Any particular food tips you can offer would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Margie
Leann...

Hi Margie,
I am assuming you aren’t vegetarian or haven’t been a long term vegetarian in the past.
The Pregnancy and B`feeding formula have quite low and safe levels of iron, but if I would just make a quick call to your OB to double check because you don’t want to accumulate iron in your body. As you have caught it nice and early I am sure baby is going just fine, they gather iron in utero as the grow and develop so as I am sure you OB has said to things are likely to be just fine. Don’t forget you may be low (now) and may not always have been and also it doesn’t necessarily mean baby is low in iron. Keep those positive thoughts in the fore… Other tips that come to mind would include:

- Eating vitamin C containing foods with each meal
- Ensure you are eating protein at each meal (perhaps ask a health expert about some plant based enzymes for digestion of nutrients such as protein given you aren’t anaemia). Protein makes hydrochloric acid for the tummy to digest protein and protein is important for hemoglobin production – so you can see the link.
- Check any medications you may be taking at all that may cause slight intestinal bleeding
- and obviously eat foods rice in iron, preferentially those rich in heme-iron such as meat
