Hi Leanne,
My son is 5months 1 week, I am breastfeeding him. He has gone from sleeping through the night to now waking again for feeds every 3-4 hours. MY GP, CHN and everything I read says to wait to 6 months to introduce solids. I really want to start some Farex now as i dont think breastmilk is totally satisfying him. Is there any real harm if i do start to introduce solids now before he is 6 months.
Well there are a few issues to consider (sorry not trying to make this too hard), for example:
- As bub will be about 5 1/2 months by now you could trial him on solids, but make sure he has all the relevant signs of being able to cope such as no tongue protrusion, can sit unassisted, can grasp and object and so on.
- The waking at night isn’t necessarily an indication of readiness for solids, it can also be teething discomfort or even a growth spurt.
- Keep in mind that while baby cereal is great for babies because of the iron, it also often has a very high glycaemic index (up near 95%), which tends to mean that is doesn’t sit in little tummies long and in fact breastmilk or formula is more satisfying. So don’t expect some solids initially to give you more sleeping time at night.
- Also you tend to start with a solids meal earlier in the day, this way baby will end the day on a good nutritious note and you have a bit more time to notice any reactions, so again this may mean sleep is not affected during the night.
With all that said and done, I personally think the decision is up to you and your baby, the guideline of ABOUT six months is just that, a guideline, all babies are different, your baby is your best guide so if you think bub is ready then its your decision, babies immunity should be sufficient to cope with the solids.
Hope that helps.
Enjoy the stage of solids, I love it, such fun.
All the best and have a great festive season
Leanne
