Please help me eliminate reasons why my 6mnth old is kept awake due to wind?

Hi, just wondering if you can help me eliminate reasons why my 6mnth old is kept awake due to what I think is not being able to pass wind?

He is formula fed (Karicare, whey based), has recently started 1 solids meal daily(altho was an issue prier), no trouble burping, poos currently every 1-2 days.

It seems he needs force to pass wind (tummy time, massage etc), be completly relaxed, or even feeding. Sometimes I think he even stops himself. He is a big boy and often seems hungry but he cannot handle too much in his tummy.

I am at a loss as to why this may be and if there is anything I should be changing? Could it be his diet or more of a physical problem?

Answer: Hi There,
it`s hard to say just what is going on, but I have listed a few things to consider below. If none of them work I would pop into see your CHN or GP, nothing is too small to check when it comes to a bub.

So, consider:

  • Check his formula is the right consistency (add water first and ensure that the scoop is not tightly packed).
  • If he has constipation (hard, dry stools that are difficult to pass), offer him more water. Offer water as often as you can think to during the day, from a sipper cup.
  • If he was fine on his formula prior to solids, this would tend to suggest it`s the solids and not the formula. However, if this has been ongoing you may want to talk with your chemist about another formula. I believe that Nan Gold is well tolerated.
  • Offer baby small amounts of solids but more frequently. So offer him two small solid meals about 30-60 minutes after a formula feed.
  • There are lots of lovely teas you might like to look at that are calming for tummies. Pop into your health food shop and ask about suitable ones for a little bub as they need to be very diluted. You can also add very small amounts of herbs to baby`s meals (such as fennel, peppermint leaves and chamomile, just a tiny pinch of dried herb).
  • Review the foods you are offering as they may be an issue and note which ones you give baby on which days and if they correlate to the degree of discomfort he experiences. Things like gluten, apple and pear and foods with apple or pear juice added to them can cause upset tummies.

I hope some of these help, often this issue passes as quietly as it occurs. Babies bodies and organs at this age are still developing and as they get bigger, their tummies can hold more, their digestive systems can process food better and things settle down.

All the best,
Leanne
