He drinks 4-5 bottles a day, is that too much?

Hi Leanne,
My son is now 4 1/2 months, he is bottlefeed and drinks 4-5 bottles a day at 250mls, is that too much?? he is a big boy - he was weighed about 3-4 weeks ago and weighed 7.5kg. Should I be giving him some water throughout the day in order to cut back on the formula? or still give him that amount of formula but introduce him to water also.
Regards, Kathy

Answer: Hi Kathy,
It sounds like you are both going fine! If you bub drinks what he is offered then that is what he is likely to need, they are very good at meeting their needs food wise even at this age, so let him be your guide, along with his growth rate, if it dips or suddenly jumps then this is time to have things checked.

Unless you think he is in need of extra fluid, if he has over-heated, lost extra fluids and so on, he won’t need water. I wouldn’t substitute water for formula as this may reduce his nutrient and calorie intake for the worse. He will need water once he starts solids though.

Hope that helps
All the best
Leanne
