Both my daughters have PKU, could you tell me what other alternatives i could use?

Both my daughters have PKU, could you tell me what other alternatives i could use to make sure they get what they need each day, they do have a supplement but my 2yrold only really wants to eat hot chips and tinned spagetti, and since they dont eat chesse or drink milk where wll they get extra calcium from apart from their rice milk.

Answer: Hi There,
Any restricted diet is tough and even touu are the cook. I would strongly recommend talking to a dietitian (over any other nutrition specialist). They have a thorough grounding in clinical issues lke PKU and will be able to advise you on some of the new products about. Ask about GMP (I have included a snippet direct from a journal to give you some info on it).

Glycomacropeptide – an intact protein formed during cheese producton, contains minimal phenylalanine GMP, when supplemented with limiting AAs, s a safe and highly acceptable alternative to synthetic AAs as the primary potein source in the nutritional management of PKU. As an intact protein souce, GMP improves protein retention and phenylalanine utilization compared with AAs.

To be honest any time a child`s diet is restrictd you should be under the guidance of a nutrition expert to ensure all the bases are covered.
