He will eat his solids and drink water but won`t touch his formula

My baby is five months old and l have introduced solids which he loves, however l am finding that he doesn`t want the bottle as much now. He is on Karicare Delact and has been since birth. I have changed formulas and teats thinking maybe he has changed his taste but to no avail. How can l get him to drink his bottles. He will eat his solids no problem and drink water but not formula so you can imagine l am worried.

Answer: Hi There,
Most bubs will consume about 800mls in a 24 hour period, this is very much an average, what is right for your baby is very much up to him and his body. One of the best ways to see if bub is going fine is to keep an eye on his development. If your bub is growing at his usual rate, is happy and healthy then you are both going just fine! If you notice any changes then pop into see your CHN or GP. Stick with the formula that has worked best and rather than make changes keep a good routine, sometimes the changes can make things more complicated.

You don’t mention the number of feeds he is having or how much so if he really is refusing his bottle and you are offering it before solids each time then it may still be a good idea to see your CHN.

It is very common for babies when they really get going on solids to drop milk feeds, their little tummies fill up quickly and they are slowly by their own volition working towards a diet totally reliant on food and not liquid. So it is very natural. When you get to 9 months and start offering milk first you are likely to again notice a drop in feeds, very natural.

I have some tip sheets on Huggies on starting solids and also a book that might help with progressing through solids, the links are:
Solids
Which foods when and fridge chart

I hope that helps,
Leanne
